1982
In the aftermath of national reunification, the demand for officials, employees, and civil servants across various sectors and localities in Southern Vietnam increased significantly. In response to this urgent need, on September 9, 1982, the Ministry of Food Industry issued Decision No. 986/CNTP establishing the Ho Chi Minh City School for Economic and Technical Personnel of the Food Industry. The institution was founded with the mission of providing training and professional development for economic and technical personnel serving the food industry in the southern region.

1986
Following the 6th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the country embarked on the Renovation (Đổi mới) process, which stimulated economic growth and generated a substantial demand for skilled labor. To meet this requirement, the Minister of Food Industry (the predecessor of the Ministry of Industry) signed Decision No. 25/CNTP-TCCB, upgrading the institution to the Ho Chi Minh City Secondary School of Food Industry. This marked an important step forward in training technically skilled human resources for the food industry.

2001
Driven by the determination and dedication of successive generations of public employees, faculty, and staff to elevate the institution to a new stage of development, the school’s persistent efforts were officially recognized. In 2001, the Minister of Education and Training signed Decision No. 18/QĐ-BGD&ĐT-TCCB, upgrading the institution to the Ho Chi Minh City College of Food Industry.

2010
In line with the growing trend of international integration and the institution’s continuous development, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 284/QĐ-TTg, under which, from February 23, 2010, the school was officially upgraded to Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry. This milestone represented a significant advancement in the University’s development journey and affirmed its expanding role within Vietnam’s higher education system.

2023
On July 1, 2023, the University officially entered a new chapter of development under its new name: Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade (HUIT), pursuant to Decision No. 789/QĐ-TTg dated July 1, 2023, issued by the Prime Minister on the renaming of Ho Chi Minh City University of Food Industry to Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade. This milestone signifies a new phase in the University’s development as a multidisciplinary and multi-level institution, aligned with its strategic vision of becoming a leading application-oriented and innovation-driven university within Vietnam’s education system.
