After a few years in the workforce, many individuals have accumulated valuable experience, skills, and industry insights. However, when aiming for higher-level positions, taking on managerial roles, or tackling complex problems, practical experience sometimes needs to be complemented by advanced knowledge and systematic thinking. This is also the juncture when many professionals begin considering pursuing a Master's degree.

Experience helps workers understand how operations work, how to handle situations, and how to adapt to real-world environments. Yet as responsibilities expand, so do the expectations placed on employees. Moving beyond excellence in specialized tasks, they may need to conduct deeper problem analysis, coordinate multiple work streams, manage resources, and make decisions with broader impacts.

At this stage, a Master's program can help learners systematize their practical experience while acquiring advanced knowledge, research methodologies, and a more structured approach to problem-solving.

This is precisely what Huynh Thi Thu Huong, a graduate in Economic Law currently in charge of student counseling and support at the International Institute, has realized through her professional journey.

Given the nature of her work—frequently interacting with, counseling, and supporting students—Huong has had the opportunity to handle numerous practical situations regarding academics, information, administrative procedures, and student needs. This very process helped her recognize the gap between undergraduate knowledge and the diverse demands of the workplace.

Thu Huong shared: "After working for a period of time, I’ve found that my practical knowledge and skills have continuously expanded. My counseling and student support work at the International Institute has also given me a clearer understanding of job requirements—ranging from problem-approaching, communication, and situational handling to cross-functional coordination. Consequently, I realize there is still much knowledge I need to hone if I want to advance further."

According to Huong, practical experience must go hand in hand with a solid professional foundation. The more she works, the more she sees the need to supplement specialized knowledge, develop logical thinking, and enhance analytical and problem-solving skills. "I believe experience helps us mature greatly, but to go further, continuous learning is essential. I hope to pursue a Master's degree to consolidate my professional expertise and gain a more methodical, systematic perspective on the challenges I encounter at work," Huong stated.

The current labor market is also constantly evolving, requiring workers to proactively update their knowledge and enhance their capabilities. For working professionals, the advantage of a Master's program lies in the ability to directly connect classroom learning with actual work, thereby gaining deeper insights and applying them more effectively.

Furthermore, the graduate environment provides opportunities for learners to exchange ideas with lecturers, experts, and fellow students working across various enterprises, agencies, and organizations. These experiences can broaden perspectives and foster valuable professional networks.

For Thu Huong, the desire to pursue a Master's degree stems from her practical personal development needs. "I believe a Master's degree will help elevate my qualifications, develop professional thinking, and better prepare me for high-demand positions in the future. This is also a way for me to take a proactive approach to my career path and create more long-term development opportunities for myself."

As work increasingly imposes higher demands, continuing education can become a necessary step for working professionals to supplement their capabilities, enrich their experience, and better prepare for future opportunities.
